Thatbyinnyu was built by King Alaung Sithu in the year 1144. It is the tallest structure in Bagan. There is a traditional rhyme sung by people of Bagan, which says:
“Massiveness is Dhammayan Gyi, Sublimity is Thatbyinnyu, Grace is Ananda.”
